Top Trump administration officials will speak at a mass prayer meeting in Washington on May 17. Organizers say the event aims to reclaim the country's religious foundations, but critics call it a quasi-official rally for Christian nationalism. Speakers include Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. President Donald Trump is expected to address the crowd via video. The White House organized the gathering as part of America's 250th birthday celebrations. Hegseth said it's a chance to “rededicate this republic to God and country”. Christian nationalism has gained prominence since Trump's return, and evangelicals form a core part of his support base. While previous administrations have held faith-based gatherings, the May 17 event is unusual for its scale and the presence of top officials. Almost all the 20 listed “faith leaders” are evangelical Protestants. Critics suggest the event promotes an idea of American identity rooted in whiteness and Christianity. The National Mall will host the event, which is scheduled to last around nine hours. TV preacher Paula White said the gathering is about rededicating the country to God.
