The Canadian Immigration Department is introducing a program to monitor foreign students. Deputy Minister Ted Gallivan revealed that a recent audit highlighted shortcomings within the ministry. Between 2018 and 2023, 800 study permits were issued based on fraudulent applications. Many individuals aimed to become permanent residents. Gallivan stated that the ministry is collaborating with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) to manage the situation. Pilot projects will begin next month to test effective techniques for student intervention. This approach will extend to other visa categories, including visitor and work visas, addressing similar issues. Gallivan emphasized a shift in the department's approach, acknowledging Canadians' concerns about tracking who is in and out of the country. Efforts are underway, both in IT and management, to improve effectiveness.
