Patrick Peterkin, the People’s National Party (PNP) caretaker for St Andrew East Rural, is urging the National Works Agency (NWA) to swiftly clear and reopen the Maryland-Woodford main road. The road has been closed due to landslides caused by heavy rains on Tuesday night. In a statement released on Saturday, Peterkin highlighted the significant impact on communities like Happy Gate District, Cambridge, Woodford, and Free Town District. The disruption has severely affected daily life, forcing residents to use alternative routes through Norbrook Hill, adding 30 to 45 minutes to their commute. Transportation costs have also doubled, adding to the financial strain on households. Peterkin emphasized the need for immediate relief for residents and a more coordinated response to restore access and stabilize conditions. He also called for long-term solutions, including investments in drainage systems, slope stabilization, and resilient infrastructure to prevent future disruptions. Peterkin assured his constituents that their concerns will be addressed and that he will push for both immediate action and lasting interventions to protect access and livelihoods in St Andrew East Rural.
