Former President Donald Trump recounted his terrifying experience during the shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25. In an interview aired on April 26, on CBS's 60 Minutes, Trump stated he felt compelled to observe the unfolding situation. This decision reportedly delayed his evacuation by Secret Service agents compared to Vice President JD Vance. Trump, now 79, explained to Norah O'Donnell that his curiosity contributed to the slower response, saying, "I wanted to see what was going on." He noted that the noise he initially heard was distinctly different from the usual sounds of a ballroom, leading him to realize the severity of the situation.
As the chaos ensued, Trump attempted to exit the ballroom but was instructed by Secret Service to drop to the ground. He complied, along with First Lady Melania Trump, whom he praised for her composure during the crisis. Trump remarked on Melania's lack of prior experience in such scenarios, stating, "I’ve been through this before a couple of times. She has not to this extent. She handled it great. She’s very strong. Smart. She got it."
The shooting suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from California, was arrested in connection with the incident and is set for arraignment on April 27. Following the unsettling event, Trump expressed a bizarre sense of honor at being targeted, commenting, "When you look at our great presidents, [this] doesn’t happen to people who don’t do anything
