The Jamaican government is directing 5% of all traffic fine revenue to the Ministry of Energy, Transport, and Telecommunications, as announced by Minister Daryl Vaz. This allocation, approximately $155.7 million, is designed to bolster the National Road Safety Policy. Vaz revealed this during the Sectoral Debate, highlighting that this marks a change from previous practices where no funds from traffic fines were allocated to road safety. The initiative will provide around $13 million monthly, with a portion earmarked for public education and behavior modification programs across the country. The policy is being updated to address current issues and align with the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030. Furthermore, an international tender has been initiated to secure expertise for a sustained national road safety campaign. Ongoing collaborations among the Transport Authority, the Jamaica Constabulary Force, and the Island Traffic Authority continue to monitor activities islandwide. During the period under review, 1,915 vehicles operating illegally were seized, and 19,413 enforcement actions were taken against operators. These measures have improved compliance and order, contributing to a record licensing year with a 3.8% increase.
