Callais, saw Justice Samuel Alito and the court's other five conservatives invalidate a Black-majority congressional district in Louisiana, deeming it an illegal racial gerrymander. While the ruling acknowledges the Voting Rights Act's applicability to redistricting, it significantly narrows the scenarios in which lawmakers and courts can intervene. This decision is another in a series of judicial actions against the historic civil rights law. The immediate consequences are uncertain, but the ruling could prompt states to challenge Black and Latino majority districts, potentially leading to a decrease in their representation. Given that Black and Latino voters often favor Democrats, this could shift the House of Representatives further towards the Republicans. Enacted in 1965 after the civil rights march from Selma, the Voting Rights Act aimed to eliminate Jim Crow election practices that prevented Black people from voting. It also established legal methods for citizens to challenge discriminatory election laws and maps.
