Manufacturers in Jamaica are being urged to reformulate their products in response to the new sugar tax on non-alcoholic sweetened beverages. The tax, which took effect on May 1, aims to reduce sugar consumption and combat non-communicable diseases. Dr. Charah Watson, executive director of the Scientific Research Council (SRC), is encouraging manufacturers to create more affordable and healthier options while maintaining taste. The SRC is offering support with reformulation, identifying alternatives, and quality testing. Larger companies have already begun producing lower-sugar alternatives, and the SRC is urging small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to take advantage of their services. Reformulation involves a gradual reduction in sugar content, and communication with consumers is key during the transition. The SRC has also developed ready-made low-sugar beverage formulations for manufacturers to license. The goal is to improve public health and help businesses remain competitive under the new tax regime.
