Shreveport Tragedy: A Call to Action Against Domestic Violence
SHREVEPORT, LA — Rev. James Green was delivering a sermon when he learned of a horrific event: a National Guard veteran shot two women and killed seven of his children and one cousin. The shooter died after a police chase. The tragedy unfolded on April 19 near Green's church in Shreveport, a city of nearly 180,000 near the Texas border. Green, also a city councilman, described the event as a profound shock. In response, he spearheaded a domestic violence summit and community vigils. He emphasized the nation's need to focus on domestic violence, which occurs frequently. However, some Americans, dealing with traumatic news and political divisions, might look away to protect their mental health. Apryl Alexander, director of the University of North Carolina Charlotte Violence Prevention Center, stated that while self-care is important, domestic violence should not be ignored. Police identified the shooter as 31-year-old Shamar Elkins, who served in the Louisiana Army National Guard. Before the shootings, Elkins told his stepfather he was struggling with dark thoughts and a looming separation from his wife, who was injured in the shooting. The other injured woman had previously sued him for child support. The victims included Jayla Elkins, Shayla Elkins, Kayla Pugh, Layla Pugh, Markaydon Pugh, Khedarrion Snow, and Braylon Snow. Their deaths are part of a phenomenon called “family annihilation.” From 2020 to 2023, such killings happened on average every five days nationwide. Walter
