Senator Dr. Elon Thompson has cautioned against the increasing trend of cyberbullying disguised as political commentary, particularly targeting Speaker Juliet Holness. Speaking during a debate on amendments to the Cybercrimes Act, Thompson noted that while criticism is essential in a democracy, the online environment in Jamaica has become increasingly hostile. He highlighted how recent online reactions to the National Reconstruction and Resilience Authority (NaRRA) debate had descended into ridicule and personal attacks. Thompson warned that such behavior could impact not only politicians but also ordinary citizens. He urged for strong political debate without cruelty and dehumanization, emphasizing the need to differentiate between criticism and humiliation.
