A study at the University Fernando Pessoa in Porto unveils the 'neuro-emotional face of saudade,' revealing its scientific coding and expressive patterns in the human face. The research, conducted by the Laboratory of Facial Expression of Emotion, identified a 'biomarker' for this emotion. The director, Freitas-Magalhães, presented the findings, which are the result of nearly two decades of work. The study focuses on the facial expression of saudade, specifically how a person's face appears when feeling this emotion. Researchers analyzed specific facial areas to determine the presence of saudade, which is a neurobiological emotion with its own brain circuits and a codifiable facial expression. This study demonstrates that complex and culturally marked emotions can be translated into scientific language. This advancement may have applications in medicine, clinical psychology, affective neuroscience, and the development of emotional artificial intelligence systems. The results are published in both Portuguese and English.
