The family behind Samsung has completed paying a 12 trillion won (£6bn; $8bn) inheritance tax bill, the largest in South Korean history. The payment was made in six installments over the last five years by Chairman Lee Jae-yong and other family members. The bill is related to the estate of the late chairman Lee Kun-hee, who died in October 2020. Samsung is South Korea's largest family-owned business. Lee Kun-hee's estate was worth 26 trillion won. Samsung confirmed the final payment, noting it was equivalent to one and a half times the country's total inheritance tax revenue for 2024. South Korea's inheritance tax rate is among the highest globally. The handling of the tax bill was watched closely by investors. Part of Lee Kun-hee's estate, including art, was donated. The Lee family has a combined net worth of over $45bn, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Their wealth has grown due to demand for computer chips. Samsung's technology operations include major smartphone and TV manufacturers. Samsung Group was founded in 1938 by Lee Byung-chul.
