Salt Spring Soars: Over 100 Residents Trained and Employed Thanks to Project STAR!

Project STAR has successfully trained over 140 residents of Salt Spring, St. James, Jamaica. The initiative focuses on skills training and job readiness programs designed to improve employability across various sectors, including hospitality and customer service, according to Kelly Griffith, the project's training and job placement team lead. Over 110 individuals have participated in job-readiness sessions, covering resume writing, interview preparation, and workplace expectations, which have led to successful employment opportunities. A partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) provided cash-for-work and cash-for-care opportunities following Hurricane Melissa. Project STAR is preparing new skills courses in areas such as guest room attendant training and bartending, aligning with employer needs and resident interests. The project plans to deepen its educational focus by collaborating with local high schools on a program designed to help students explore career options and build professional skills. Additionally, the project includes family support initiatives and youth engagement activities. A Parenting Club launched in March has engaged 25 parents, with plans to expand and include topics such as nursing techniques and leadership. Support for seniors is provided through the Visionary Senior Citizens Club, with activities like craft-making and games.
