On April 30, U.S. Representative Young Kim expressed her commitment to the prompt reauthorization of the North Korea Human Rights Act, which has been expired for more than six years. During a roundtable discussion at the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, attended by 11 North Korean defectors and held in conjunction with North Korea Freedom Week, Kim vowed to be a strong advocate for those who have escaped the regime. "I will do everything I can to ensure the North Korea Human Rights Act is reauthorized as quickly as possible in this Congress," she stated.
Kim emphasized the urgent need for reauthorization during the meeting, beginning her remarks in English. She noted her extensive engagement with North Korean human rights issues over the past 30 years, including 21 years as a congressional aide and her subsequent role as an elected official. After listening to the defectors' testimonies, she switched to Korean without the help of an interpreter, underscoring her dedication to the cause. "The key takeaway from your stories is that we must unite to reauthorize the North Korea Human Rights Act," she articulated in Korean.
She pointed out that a crucial aspect of the legislation is the funding designated for broadcasting into North Korea, highlighting that the quality of these transmissions from outlets like Radio Free Asia and Voice of America has diminished. "Resources for broadcasting are vital," she asserted, adding that she would represent the defectors' voices
