Dejanea Oakley from the University of Georgia became the second Jamaican woman to achieve a sub-49.00 seconds in the 400m race. She achieved a personal best of 48.92 seconds, securing her victory on the final day of the South Eastern Conference Outdoor Championships at Auburn University. Oakley's time is now the world-leading and NCAA number 1, surpassing her previous best of 49.65 seconds. She is now only behind Nickisha Pryce's national record of 48.57 seconds. Oakley is on track to defend her NCAA title, after finishing second last year. In the same event, Shaquena Foote, her teammate, placed eighth with a time of 51.02 seconds. In addition, Gabrielle Matthews from the University of Florida became the ninth Jamaican woman to run under 11.00 seconds in the 100m. She achieved a personal best and school record of 10.97 seconds (0.5m/s), winning the women's 100m at the SEC championships. Matthews had led after the first round on Friday, improving on her previous best of 11.11 seconds set six weeks ago. In the men's discus throw, Ralford Mullings from the University of Oklahoma won with a throw of 65.10m, after finishing seventh the previous year. Three Jamaicans filled the top three positions. Trevor Gunzell from Alabama secured second place with 62.40m, and Christopher Young, also from Alabama, took third with a season's best of 59.86m SB. Shaiquan Dunn from the University of Texas achieved a personal best of 59.30m.
