Maharashtra's first detention center for illegal foreign nationals in Bhoiwada is facing a space shortage less than two months after opening. This is due to increased crackdowns on undocumented immigrants in Mumbai and the surrounding region. The center, intended for temporary housing of those awaiting deportation, is nearing its capacity. This is due to a rise in detained Bangladeshi and Pakistani nationals. The center became operational in March. It was created to address the issue of foreign nationals being held in police lockups for extended periods. Officials note that these detainees are not always conventional criminals. Police sources stated that some detainees were asked to stay within police station limits while deportation paperwork was processed. The Bhoiwada center was designed as a central holding facility. It allows foreign nationals to stay until they are deported. The two-story facility has about 40 rooms. It can accommodate roughly 80 detainees. However, the numbers have grown rapidly since it opened. Deportation delays are a major issue, as authorities must establish nationality, coordinate with embassies, and secure travel documents before deportation. Crackdowns on undocumented immigrants have intensified across Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai. This is increasing pressure on the detention system. Verification drives have been conducted in various locations. Detention centers are designed for longer stays and include better facilities than police lockups.
