Opposition Spokesman on Education, Damion Crawford, has pointed out deficiencies in Jamaica's early childhood sector. He stated that a significant number of four-year-olds are not assessed before entering the formal education system. Crawford noted that in 2024, only 54.4% of approximately 29,729 assessed four-year-olds met all developmental milestones. He added that 19% of enrolled students were not assessed. Crawford stated that a significant proportion of children enter primary school without the necessary readiness and that these deficiencies are largely environmental and structural. He also mentioned that access to early childhood education remains limited, with funding below international benchmarks, and a low percentage of teachers with bachelor's degrees.
