Kim Jong Un's Shocking Battlefield Strategy: Suicide as a Military Doctrine

North Korea's leader praises soldiers who chose suicide over capture. What does this reveal about Pyongyang's military tactics?
Kim Jong Un's Shocking Battlefield Strategy: Suicide as a Military Doctrine
In a rare public statement, Kim Jong Un has praised North Korean soldiers who chose to end their lives rather than be captured by Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region. This acknowledgment sheds light on a severe military doctrine long suspected by officials and intelligence services. According to North Korean state media KCNA, Kim lauded the troops who chose self-destruction to avoid surrender. His remarks were made during a memorial event for soldiers who died in combat, attended by Russian officials and grieving families. This marks the first time Kim has openly recognized the extreme measures taken by North Korean soldiers supporting Russian forces to avoid capture. North Korea deployed approximately 14,000 troops to Russia's western Kursk region to support Moscow's war effort. These forces suffered significant losses, with over 6,000 soldiers believed killed in intense fighting. Intelligence reports and defector testimony have indicated that North Korean troops were expected to detonate grenades or take their own lives rather than risk capture. This policy appears to have extended even to the few who survived. According to The Guardian, two North Korean soldiers captured by Ukrainian forces were also expected to end their lives. The policy reflects the extreme measures Pyongyang takes to maintain control and prevent defections, even at the cost of soldiers' lives. The incident highlights the brutal realities of the conflict and the sacrifices demanded by the North Korean regime
