Operators of public passenger vehicles (PPV) in Jamaica will have to wait longer for a 16% fare adjustment, according to Minister of Transport Daryl Vaz. The decision comes amidst rising fuel prices due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Vaz addressed the issue during the 2026/27 Sectoral Debate, noting the strain on PPV operators. He stated that the government is considering the fare adjustment, keeping in mind the impact on inflation and economic factors. Fuel now accounts for a significant portion of monthly operating expenses for PPV operators. The government is fast-tracking the implementation of the fare adjustment along with a public communication plan and is also exploring relief measures. Long-term solutions include fleet modernization and incentives for electric vehicles, aiming to balance the needs of operators and commuters.
