Jamaica's Hurricane Shield: $250M Boost for Crucial Drain Cleaning!
The Jamaican government has dedicated $246 million to enhance pre-hurricane preparations across the island, with a strong emphasis on drain cleaning and related actions before the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season. According to a Tuesday announcement, each constituency will receive approximately $2 million for drain cleaning in at-risk and key communities. This funding mirrors the increased support provided to constituencies last year, which helped members of parliament in their efforts to clean drains and other local mitigation efforts before the hurricane season. The remaining funds will be used by the National Works Agency for special mitigation efforts at the national level, particularly in areas that need technical assistance, heavy equipment, or work beyond what can be done by constituencies. Minister Robert Nesta Morgan emphasized the government's dedication to proactive measures, practical readiness, and greater resilience. He noted that Jamaica has been experiencing more intense rainfall, putting extra strain on infrastructure. The pre-hurricane mitigation program is part of a larger resilience plan that includes road repairs, bridge work, gully interventions, and better coordination among government agencies. Members of parliament, in collaboration with local authorities and technical teams, will identify priority drains and critical areas that need immediate cleaning. The focus will be on communities most vulnerable to flooding, blocked drains, and poor stormwater runoff
