Minister of Water, Environment and Climate Change, Matthew Samuda, has announced that the ADAPT Jamaica project will be a major investment in climate resilience for the agricultural sector. The project has secured US$50 million through the Green Climate Fund. Samuda stated that the initiative will directly benefit over 700,000 Jamaicans, particularly smallholder farmers and rural communities. The project, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation, Jamaica Social Investment Fund, Development Bank of Jamaica, and the Agriculture Ministry, will introduce climate-smart technologies like solar-powered irrigation and resilient greenhouses. These measures aim to enhance productivity and reduce vulnerability to extreme weather events. Samuda emphasized the importance of ensuring food security and supporting rural livelihoods. He noted that the project will also increase agricultural output, reduce import dependency, and improve economic stability. The initiative demonstrates how targeted investments can provide both environmental and socio-economic benefits.
