Member of Parliament Dwayne Vaz is criticizing the government for not fulfilling its promise to relocate residents of the Petersfield High School hurricane shelter to suitable accommodations by the set deadline. Vaz stated that the residents are now forced to occupy rat-infested teachers' quarters. He noted that while 50 container houses were promised, only five foundations have been prepared, and the site lacks electricity, sewage systems, and water. Vaz is calling on the Prime Minister to intervene due to mismanagement. The Ministry of Local Government and Community Development had previously announced the relocation by May 8, 2026, as part of a recovery effort. The announcement followed reports of inappropriate behavior in the shelters.
