An Israeli court has prolonged the detention of two activists from a Gaza-bound humanitarian aid flotilla. These activists were apprehended by Israeli authorities last week, according to an Israeli rights group representing them. The Ashkelon Magistrates’ Court approved the state's request to extend the detention of Saif Abu Keshek from Spain and Brazilian Thiago Avila until May 10. The pair were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters off Greece on April 30. Organizers state that Abu Keshek and Avila were taken to Israel for questioning, while the majority of the 180 activists were taken to Crete. Adalah stated that the court's decision validates the state's actions and that they will appeal this decision. The extension was based on 'secret evidence' that the activists and their lawyers were not allowed to review. No charges have been filed, but the men face accusations of affiliation with a 'terrorist organization' and contact with foreign agents. Lawyers Hadeel Abu Salih and Lubna Tuma argue the allegations are baseless. The activists have been kept in isolation and are on hunger strike since their abduction. The flotilla's organizers demand their release.
