Sasha Thorpe, a primary school teacher who is blind, has overcome significant challenges to fulfill her dream of educating others. Thorpe lost her eyesight completely during her second year at St Joseph’s Teachers’ College due to glaucoma, a condition that damages the optic nerve and can lead to total blindness if untreated. "I am completely blind in both eyes," she shared with Observer Online. "I was born with an eye issue, and by the time I reached 22, I had lost my vision entirely during my studies." Despite this setback, Thorpe was determined to succeed and pushed herself to complete her education. "I told myself that I needed to work harder. Giving up was not an option. I knew my vision would deteriorate over time, but when it happened, I resolved to work even harder to achieve my goals. I never felt stressed or depressed; I adapted quickly," she recounted. After earning her diploma from St Joseph’s Teachers’ College, Thorpe pursued a bachelor’s degree in primary education at Mico University College, marking the beginning of her professional career. "My first position was at the School for the Blind, where I worked for two and a half years before transitioning to the mainstream education system," she explained.
