The Jamaican government is set to upgrade the Hermitage Dam in Stony Hill, St Andrew, with an investment of US$250 million. Minister of Water, Environment and Climate Change, Matthew Samuda, announced that the National Water Commission (NWC) will lead the project, prioritizing improvements in water storage capacity and system resilience. The announcement was made during the Sectoral Debate at Gordon House. This initiative includes a technical assessment of the dam's structural integrity and sedimentation levels, along with potential capacity enhancements. Additionally, the government plans to review the storage at the Mona Reservoir for possible expansion and rehabilitation. At the community level, the installation of storage tanks, estimated at US$7 million, will strengthen local capacity and improve responses to service disruptions. The NWC has also enhanced its emergency response capabilities through portable water treatment units and partnerships to supplement water availability during droughts or supply disruptions. New water treatment plants are planned at Roaring River and Rio Bueno through public-private partnerships, which will add 40 million gallons per day to the network. Upgrades at the White River, Martha Brae, and Great River treatment facilities will further contribute, adding approximately 30 million gallons per day.
