Health authorities in Westmoreland, Jamaica, are increasing surveillance for hantavirus due to regional concerns, even though no confirmed cases have been recorded in Jamaica. Medical Officer of Health for Westmoreland, Dr. Marcia Graham, announced the heightened monitoring during a meeting of the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation. The monitoring includes increased checks at ports of entry to prevent exposure through travel. Individuals identified as potential contacts are closely monitored, given the virus's incubation period of one to eight weeks, with quarantine for at least six weeks. Dr. Graham confirmed that there are no suspected or confirmed cases under surveillance in Jamaica. She urged residents to avoid spreading misinformation online and to verify information from credible sources, like the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the World Health Organization, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The medical officer also reiterated the importance of mosquito breeding prevention and rodent control. She expressed concern about accidental poisonings among children in the parish and urged parents and caregivers to securely store hazardous household chemicals and other dangerous substances out of children's reach.
