Cape Verde has prohibited passengers from disembarking a cruise ship, MV Hondius, anchored off its coast due to a suspected hantavirus outbreak. The decision followed the confirmation of three deaths on board. The World Health Organization (WHO) Europe stated that the risk to the wider public remains low. The ship operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, confirmed the deaths and stated that one passenger is in intensive care in Johannesburg, while two others require urgent medical attention. The president of Cape Verde’s National Institute of Public Health said that passengers would not be allowed to disembark to protect the local population. Dutch authorities are organizing the repatriation of two symptomatic individuals. The WHO is supporting medical care, evacuation, investigations, and public health risk assessment. Hantavirus, typically transmitted from rodents, has been confirmed in the passenger in intensive care, but the cause of the deaths is still under investigation. The WHO noted that hantavirus can spread between people and can lead to severe respiratory illness.
