The cruise ship, MV Hondius, linked to a Hantavirus outbreak, arrived in Tenerife, Spain, escorted by a Civil Guard vessel. The ship had departed for Tenerife on May 6th, after the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Union requested Spain to manage the evacuation of its passengers. The WHO received notification on May 2nd regarding a cluster of severe acute respiratory illness aboard the Dutch-flagged cruise ship, including two deaths and one critically ill passenger. By May 8th, a total of eight cases, including three deaths, had been reported, resulting in a case fatality ratio of 38 percent. Six cases have been laboratory-confirmed as hantavirus infections, all identified as Andes virus (ANDV). Hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS), also known as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), is a zoonotic, viral respiratory disease caused by Hantavirus. Hantaviruses found in Europe and Asia can cause haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). Human-to-human transmission has not been documented in this part of the world.
