A starch processing facility in Kyekyewere, Ghana, built under the One District One Factory initiative, is now overgrown with weeds. The project, funded by the African Development Bank, IFAD, and the Ghanaian government, was intended to boost agro-industrial growth and create jobs, but it stands as a symbol of unfulfilled promises. Construction began around 2019 but stalled due to funding issues and logistical problems. The factory was meant to process cassava into starch and create thousands of jobs. The facility, located near the Assin Fosu-Kumasi highway, now resembles a derelict jungle. Many locals who had hoped for employment are now disappointed, with some expressing their frustration. Farmers also suffered, with some forced to sell their cassava farms. A former District Chief Executive confirmed the facility was state-funded but awaiting official commencement before her departure in 2024. The Assembly officials claimed ignorance of the project. Some officials demanded transparency and accountability regarding the project's idleness.
