Brianna Leapley, now Nechama, recounts her journey from a sheltered upbringing to a new Jewish life in Jerusalem. Raised in a conservative Christian family, she was homeschooled and lived among the Amish in Kentucky. At 21, she was training for a job when she struggled with an elevator. Her childhood included outdoor play and responsibility. When her mother introduced Jewish practices, she became fascinated. She was given an "Israel" passport. Although her family appreciated Jewish practices, they were committed Christians. When the family started visiting Amish communities, Brianna was eager to adopt their practices. She felt alone in the Amish community. She learned to speak Pennsylvania Dutch and made friends. She felt alone despite the community. At 20, she realized she wasn't getting what she needed from the Amish lifestyle. At 21, she left with her father's blessing. She moved to Raleigh, North Carolina. After the October 7, 2023, attacks, she decided to pursue her childhood dream of becoming Jewish. She searched for Jews online, and she found a job in Brooklyn. She converted to Judaism, becoming Nechama. She now gives speaking presentations. She has an email, a cellphone, and an iPad. She still corresponds with her parents by mail. She sees the differences between Amish life and an Orthodox lifestyle. Nechama's journey is remarkable.
