Maxine, a 62-year-old retail sales assistant from Barnsley, and Fred, a 44-year-old builder and home educator from Sheffield, shared a meal to discuss their differing viewpoints. Maxine, who has voted for various "patriotic parties" like the English Democrats, and Fred, who has voted for Labour and Green, found themselves at odds over the display of national flags. Fred, involved with an anti-fascist group, recounted an incident where flags were displayed, leading to racist and homophobic language. Maxine viewed the removal of these flags as aggressive. They did, however, find common ground in their polite discourse. The restaurant served a Brazilian grill, offering a vegan Wellington for Fred, while Maxine enjoyed the meat options. Despite their contrasting views on flags, they found a level of civility in their conversation.
