A recent study has found that many of the world's largest digital platforms are failing to meet basic standards of transparency regarding their advertising practices. The research, conducted by NetLab at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in collaboration with the Minderoo Centre for Technology & Democracy at the University of Cambridge, examined 15 major digital platforms across Brazil, the European Union (EU), and the United Kingdom. These platforms, including social media giants like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, were assessed to compare their information provision within different regulatory frameworks. The EU, known for its advanced platform regulation, and the UK, which uses a case-by-case approach, were contrasted with Brazil, where regulatory oversight is still developing. The study applied the Social Media Transparency Index to evaluate the platforms' accessibility, understandability, and verifiability of data on content and advertising. The findings highlight the need for greater transparency in the digital advertising landscape, with the study's authors emphasizing that platform transparency should not be a matter of corporate choice, but a regulatory requirement.
