China houses the largest workforce of gig workers globally, totaling 200 million individuals. Many of them endure extensive hours in challenging environments with uncertain earnings. In response, Beijing is crafting new regulations aimed at enhancing worker protections. Hong Kong, which also has a significant population of gig workers, plans to implement similar improvements following its commitments made last year. These workers are essential to the growth of China's consumer economy, yet they lack the benefits that full-time employees receive. The rapid development of technology in business has outpaced existing legislation, necessitating a regulatory catch-up. The convenience of mobile shopping has surged, with advanced algorithms—some utilizing artificial intelligence—efficiently processing orders and coordinating deliveries under strict timelines. Recently, Beijing unveiled a 12-point strategy that outlines the need for prompt and equitable wage disbursements, improved social welfare, safety protocols for extreme weather conditions, and greater transparency in the algorithms used by platforms regarding order management, fees, and time constraints, among other initiatives. Historically, the practices within these platforms have been exploitative, exacerbated by technological advancements.
