Chilean President José Antonio Kast informed Israeli President Isaac Herzog of his intention to reinstate Chile's ambassador to Israel within weeks, signaling a significant shift in their diplomatic ties. The announcement occurred during a meeting between Herzog and Kast at the inauguration of Costa Rica's President, Laura Fernández Delgado. This was Herzog's first diplomatic encounter with world leaders at the event. The two leaders explored avenues to fortify relations between Israel and Chile, potentially reviving cooperative efforts in sectors like agriculture, health, artificial intelligence, and technology. Kast explained that he was responding to demands from the Chilean populace regarding the "Palestinian issue," but his focus would remain on Israel-Chile diplomatic relations. He also mentioned his government's efforts to combat terrorism and antisemitism within Chile. The recall of the Chilean ambassador in October 2023, under former President Gabriel Boric, was a protest against perceived "violations of international humanitarian law" following the onset of the war with Gaza. Boric's government later escalated actions against Israel by removing military and embassy attaches. Herzog viewed the discussion as beneficial to both nations. Additionally, Honduran President Nasry Asfura indicated his plan to return Honduras' ambassador to Israel, who had departed at the start of the war, and discussed security and health matters with Herzog, promising cooperation.
