On Saturday, a man drove a vehicle containing incendiary devices, including propane tanks and improvised explosives, into the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland, Oregon. Portland authorities were alerted shortly before 3 a.m. after employees reported a car had crashed into the building and caught fire. The driver was found dead inside the vehicle after Portland Fire and Rescue extinguished the flames. The Portland Police Bureau reported that the explosives had not fully detonated, necessitating the involvement of the explosive disposal squad to continue the investigation. According to NBC News, Officer Jim DeFrain, the leader of the explosive disposal squad, described the scene as the most complex he had encountered in his 13 years as a bomb technician. Police Chief Bob Day stated that the incident was isolated and not an act of domestic terrorism. The driver's identity is yet to be confirmed due to ongoing risks. CNN reported that Adam Linnman, a club spokesperson, confirmed the incident occurred when the club was closed, with no injuries to members or staff.
