Republican incumbents Young Kim and Ken Calvert are vying to retain their Congressional seats, facing a strong challenge from Democrats in California's 40th District. This district, combining portions of Kim and Calvert's current districts, spans from Mission Viejo in Orange County to Woodcrest, Menifee, and Murrieta in Riverside County. The district was redrawn under Proposition 50 and is considered a relatively safe Republican seat. In 2024, President Trump would have won this district by 12 points. Ken Calvert, the longest-serving Republican in California's congressional delegation, was first elected in 1992. He serves on the House Committee on Appropriations. His priorities include strengthening the economy, addressing immigration, advocating for veterans, and finding solutions for California's water issues. Young Kim was one of the first Korean American women elected to Congress in 2020. She serves on the House Committees on Foreign Affairs, Financial Services, and the Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party. Before Congress, she served in the state Assembly. Kim also worked for over two decades for Rep. Ed Royce. Esther Kim Varet, a Democrat and art gallery owner, holds a Ph.D. in art history and lives in Trabuco Canyon.
