Prime Minister Gaston Browne departed Antigua and Barbuda on Wednesday for high-level international engagements in New York City. The focus is on climate resilience, renewable energy transition, sustainable development financing, democracy, human rights, and reparatory justice. These engagements are part of the Global Citizen NOW initiative. They will position Antigua and Barbuda at the center of discussions leading up to the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Prime Minister Browne will speak at a panel discussion titled “Bridging the Gap – The Frontlines of the Climate Crisis” on May 14, 2026, at Spring Studios in New York City. The panel will address the impact of climate change on vulnerable countries and the need for more equitable global climate financing. The Prime Minister will join a panel with Alok Sharma and Brazilian indigenous filmmaker Priscila Tapajowara. Environmental journalist Oliver Milman will moderate the discussion. Prime Minister Browne is expected to highlight the threats climate change poses to Small Island Developing States (SIDS), including severe hurricanes and rising sea levels. He will also advocate for reforms to improve access to financing for vulnerable nations. In addition to the panel, the Prime Minister will hold bilateral meetings with global leaders. These meetings aim to advance Antigua and Barbuda’s climate and sustainable development agenda before CHOGM 2026. Key discussions will include a strategic partnership

with the Bezos Earth Fund to support a Caribbean and Commonwealth climate initiative. The proposal seeks to position Antigua and Barbuda as a launchpad for a broader regional climate and clean energy agenda. The Prime Minister will advocate for a three-pillar climate partnership, including a Climate and Clean Energy Leaders’ Segment during Global Citizen NOW: Antigua and Barbuda, a Caribbean Climate Action Initiative, and the establishment of a Commonwealth Climate Compact. Prime Minister Browne will also meet with Zosia North-Bond to explore the “Power Caribbean Initiative.” The initiative would adapt renewable energy financing models for the Caribbean region. The proposed initiative would support investments in solar energy, battery storage, and community-owned renewable energy projects. Discussions will also examine community energy ownership models and climate-resilient energy infrastructure. The Prime Minister will engage with the Open Society Foundations on opportunities to partner with Antigua and Barbuda. These discussions will focus on democracy, human rights, and reparatory justice during CHOGM 2026 and Global Citizen NOW: Antigua and Barbuda. Prime Minister Browne will invite global leaders to participate in the Antigua and Barbuda-hosted engagements leading into CHOGM 2026. The Government views the upcoming summit as a transformative opportunity. The Prime Minister has consistently advocated for international action on climate change. His participation in the New York engagements forms part of the Government’s strategy to strengthen partnerships.
