CHENNAI: While the Chennai Super Kings are experiencing a mixed season, Anshul Kamboj, the medium-pacer, is emerging as their standout player. With 17 wickets in nine matches, boasting an economy rate of 7.54, including a 3-32 performance against the Mumbai Indians on Saturday, Kamboj has become the leading bowler for CSK, excelling in both powerplay and slog overs. His performance on Saturday at Chepauk, where he secured the wickets of Robin Minz and Hardik Pandya in the 18th and 20th overs, made him the first bowler this season to claim 10 wickets in the death overs.
Kamboj, a right-arm seamer, approaches the death overs with precision, often going around the stumps, especially to right-handed batters, and adjusting his lengths. CSK head coach Stephen Fleming isn't surprised by Kamboj's success, highlighting his hard work with bowling coach Eric Simons. Last season, Kamboj took eight wickets in eight games with an economy of 8.00. He made his India Test debut shortly after, though his performance against England didn't lead to a long run. This season, however, he has returned stronger, taking a key role in CSK’s pace attack following Khaleel Ahmed’s injury. Fleming mentioned that Kamboj focused on angles and execution during the pre-season, which has paid off. With India having upcoming cricket matches, Kamboj's performance could see him back in the national team. Kamboj prioritizes team performance, stating his focus is on contributing to the team's wins.
