Eliseu Carvalho, a 57-year-old açaí cultivator in Brazil, is considering abandoning harvesting due to a devastating wildfire near his community. Acará, a productive açaí region, was severely affected by intense wildfires in 2024. Carvalho watched the flames consume almost 30 hectares of forestland. Prolonged drought made the vegetation susceptible to fire. About 2 hectares of açaí palms burned to the ground. Carvalho estimated financial losses of around $10,000, and his family lost their income source. The land is regenerating, but the soil remains degraded. It takes about six years for açaí trees to produce fruit again. Carvalho is considering fish farming due to the uncertainty, but his family lacks resources. The Amazon Rainforest is known for its biodiversity.
