Nike, once a market leader, invested millions in its Breaking2 project. While Eliud Kipchoge broke the 2-hour mark in Vienna in 2019, it wasn't officially recognized. Now, Sabastian Sawe and Yomif Kejelch have officially run under two hours, wearing Adidas. Four of the five fastest finishers at the London Marathon wore Adidas trainers, specifically the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3, which retail at $850. The shoes weigh just 97 grams, making them the lightest legal race shoe. Adidas reduced the weight by 30% compared to Nike's best. Nike's Alphafly 4 weighs 200g. Adidas used a carbon fiber plate and Lightstrike Pro foam for ultralight and bouncy shoes. Sawe cut his best time by two minutes and 35 seconds. Nike, in a rare move, applauded Sawe's feat. Nike's stock continues to fall, trading at $45.70, down from $165 five years ago. Adidas and the Adizero are now the choice for runners.
