Dorrett Wood Brown, a trailblazer in maternal and prenatal healthcare in St Ann, recently celebrated her 100th birthday. Born on April 8, 1926, she was the second of eight children and is now the last surviving sibling. In 1961, she founded the Resthaven maternity home in Brown’s Town, becoming a pioneer in maternal and prenatal healthcare. She received sponsorship to study nursing in England from 1951 to 1960. Upon her return, she established the maternity home using funds that she had received. Her daughter, Ruth Heron, noted that Wood Brown still recites Bible verses from memory. Her faith has played an instrumental role in her life. Wood Brown's love for the elderly was passed on to her adopted daughter, Karen Weir, who opened her own nursing home. The celebration was attended by family, friends, and Monique Richards from the National Council for Senior Citizens. The news was reported on May 11, 2026.
